Outbreaks of Legionnaires disease are well publicised

and taken extremely seriously by the Health & Safety

Executive and Local Authorities. The disease can prove

fatal in certain susceptible groups of people.  Outbreaks

typically result in a 12% fatality rate.

Vulnerable groups to the disease include:

· Over 45`s & the young

· Males are twice as susceptible as females

· People with suppressed immune systems e.g. transplant patients

· Heavy smokers & drinkers

· People with weak lungs or kidney disease.

 

All persons responsible for any premises, other than private dwellings, are required to undertake a risk

 assessment of the water system and demonstrate that the system is maintained according to the L8

ACoP.  Risk Assessments must be reviewed every 2 years, whenever there is a significant change to

the system or if there has been an outbreak of the disease.
